  1. How do you feel your writing has changed over the course of the semester? (Give me detailed examples with evidence pls)
  2. why do you suppose reflecting learning? why is it important?
  3. What do you understand about audience (and therefore tailoring your argument) that you didnt before? How can you use that knowledge to further your career as a student and as a professional?
  4. If you could have changed an assignment, which assignment would it be, how would you change it, and why? How would you (and potentially your classmates) benefit from this change?
  5. And finally, what can I do as a teacher to improve the gaming theme, the lectures, the assignments/projects, the journal entries, and/or anything else? Dont just say “nothing, it was all great” – take a moment and really think about this.

My writing has changed over the span of the 4 months of my English class. I knew before writing my Evicted paper that I was a little rusty in the writing department. My writing now could use some work and I hope I can fix if for future papers.

Looking back on your writing can help you with your writing in the future. Your past papers and your current paper can show your progress and know how far you’ve come in writing. You have to take a couple of minutes with your papers and spot the difference. Our peer-review helped me. I could have another perspective on my paper and I got to see mistakes and changes that I couldn’t see before.

Knowing your audience is crucial in writing a paper. You should think about your audience and change your vernacular to let them understand you.

If I had to change one of my assignments in my class, it would be my annotated bibliography. Our annotate bibliographies are very important source when writing a paper. It makes it easier for someone to read back through their notes without having read the entire book again.

If I could improve my teacher’s technique about her gaming theme, I would suggest her to think more about her students. Not all of her students are going to understand her and not all of them are going to have the same interests. While we were having discussions in class, I felt out of place when I didn’t know what the game or game style was. I would pretend to understand the topic and nod along with the rest of the classroom. Besides my comment, I think she is a very wonderful teacher. She takes her interests and incorporates it into the lesson plans.

September 12th

12 November, 2018

In my English class, we were assigned to play games, such as September 12th, Spent, or The McDonald’s Video Game, and write about our game-play. I chose to play September 12th, because I couldn’t find the links to the other games and I thought that September 12th had an original name enough for me to search it.

The instructions for the game was clear and simple. There are civilians and terrorist roaming the area. You can shoot or not shoot. You can’t win or lose at the game. This game is not a game, but a simulation. While playing the “game”, I could distinguish between the terrorists and the civilians. When I put my mouse over the terrorist, there was a grid indicating to shoot the terrorist. I clicked and a missile was shot. The terrorist moved and the missile hit nearby building s civilians. Everyone was moving constantly and the terrorists were all ways close to another civilian or building. You had to match the timing of the missile and the terrorist. I learned that if you shoot at a terrorist, you will hit a civilian and/or building. I no longer wanted to play the game. It felt worthless to shoot the bad guy when you are going to hurt innocent people. It would be best not to fire the missile at all.

This game had a message. I interpreted it as “If you are preventing something bad to happen, you will destroy something else without noticing”. The simulation represented what was going on today. The game never ends.

It is important for games to have an argument. In this generation, we are trapped in a screen. If so many of us are doing this, why not use it to our advantage? We could teach the community without having to try so hard. If there is no argument in a game, what would be the point in playing it? There would be no plot or story.

Improvement

5 November, 2018

From my first journals and essays, my writing process has changed drastically. Back then, I had no clue what I was doing. I did not have a writing format for my essays. I’m still having a little trouble with writing my essays, but it is getting a lot easier. I have to thank my teacher for teaching me the Toulmin Model of Argument and the Question Tree. Without her, I would not know any strategies to accomplish my argumentative essay.

I now know how to research for my papers. From previous papers, I do not remembering having any experience looking at sources other than online. I can physically go to the library and look for hard copy books. I know the importance of citing my papers and how to cite them correctly depending on the style. I’ve also completely wiped out “putting the citations in alphabetically in order” for the Works Cited page out of my head. It has been a long time since I have learned these tips, but it is good to get caught back up again. Hopefully, I will try to memorize these notes and try not to forget about it for future papers.

For my argumentative paper, I think it was difficult to know what I was going to talk about. I had a different approach from my previous journals. When my teacher was explaining how to use the Question Tree, she was using another classmate’s topic to help us understand better. The whole time she was explaining, I thinking of how I’m going to use this for my paper. I was stuck for a while on planning on what to write. I did not know how I could use this format for my essay. It could be my topic that was giving me a hard time.

Movie Analysis’

29 October, 2018

Hi there! Back again with the film theories.

The first one is going to be “Film Theory: Can The Lion King SURVIVE on Bugs?”

MatPat describes the scene in Lion King, where Simba runs away from home and lives with Timon and Pumbaa. Simba starts to get hungry and Timon tells him if he’s going to live with them, he has to eat like them, which are bugs. MatPat questions, “Can lions actually survive off of bugs?”

I think his argument was good. MatPat takes you on a cohesive journey about his argument. He didn’t leave me with questions on what he was stating. He finds useful details to figure out his argument like, the location that is based off of the movie, the timeline between Simba running away and rejoining his colony and Simba’s “diet” is similar to a lion’s diet that is in captivity. Simba should be eating approximately 3 kgs of meat per day, so he should be eating about 3 kgs of bugs per day. Using multiple bugs based off of the location, MatPat finds that termites are the “perfect” meal for a lion. But if a lion ate bugs for 3 years, they would lose their tooth that rips and grinds meat off of bones. At the end of The Lion King, Simba and Scar has to fight. Simba could no longer use his teeth to fight, meaning that Scar would win. I agree with MatPat’s point.

The last one is going to be “Film Theory: The Cars in The Cars Movie AREN’T CARS!”

MatPat states that the cars in The Cars Movie aren’t cars. His argument was not good. I could not follow through with his points. He exaggerates in most of  his argument. I would not guess that they had brains based off of one clip.He goes on saying that the outer part of a car is their exoskeleton, which is ridiculous. You see in the movie that Buzz is walking without his tires and that the tires represent his feet. That would the last assumption I would make about that scene. At the end of the video, he claims that the cars in The Cars movie are actually bugs. I disagree with his statement.

Food for Thought

22 October, 2018

In my English class, we are writing an argumentative essay about the gaming community. We could choose any topic we wanted but we had to make sure we can argue and provide evidence. My mind was running blank about what I should write about. I was playing Toontown and considered how it was full of corrupted capitalism. I decided to link those two things together to write my paper. Here’s my thesis:

MMORPGs, massive multiplayer online role playing games, have been established itself as a form of entertainment. As a result, MMORPGs have shifted their image to have a capitalistic issue due to the video game industry pressuring their consumers.

It still could use some work. I have a hard time working on my thesis’ for papers. As for the whole process of my paper, I have not thought any further. I should start planning my essay and organizing them by ideas. For my resources, I could use the information from my library research assignment. I sort of know how to use the library database to find my sources. It’s pretty easy to find the books from their ISNs. It was difficult trying to incorporate the quotes and my topic into a cohesive thought. I could find multiple varies of sources to use and put them in a list, so I can easily go back to it and find it. From my own knowledge of games, I could experience more games to give me more evidence in my essay. It has been a very long time since I have written an argumentative essay, so I’ll try my very best to write it the most I can. After I complete my rough draft, I can proof read to make sure it’s how I like it. If I’m doubting my writing skills, I can ask someone to read my paper as well and ask them for good criticism.

Film Theory

15 October, 2018

In Film Theory: The Disney Princess Problem (Wreck It Ralph 2)”, MatPat asks the question “What makes a princess a princess?”. He goes on about the original list of princesses, whether or not they wore a dress. He tries to find a way that links all the princess together and why some princesses like, Anna, Elsa and Moana, are not considered as princesses. At the end of the video, MatPat explains how to be a princess “It is not who you are, what you do, or who you to choose to marry. It’s what you wear that counts.” Throughout my life, I have watched Disney movies, especially Disney Princess movies. I never questioned what made a princess a princess until MatPat’s video. I thought his argument was good. I don’t believe I would agree or to disagree with his statement that a princess’ outfit makes them a princess. I mean I would say that any one can be a princess by his argument. I guess I am leading towards disagreement. I don’t think what he said was true.

In another video of MatPat “Film Theory: Disney’s FROZEN – Anna and Elsa are NOT SISTERS?!”, MatPat explains that Anna and Elsa are not sisters, but Elsa and Rapunzel are twins. He uses that Rapunzel’s parents are Elsa’s. He then tries to use their hair, their left-handedness, location, timing to distinguish that they’re sisters/twins. They are the only two princess to have magical powers. In Rapunzel, the evil mom stabs Eugene in the stomach. Rapunzel hugs Eugene and finds that her true love saves him. In Frozen, Hans turns Anna frozen. Elsa cries and finds that her true love saves her.  I believe he used great points to back up his argument. When he was storytelling as if Elsa and Rapunzel are sisters, it seemed like it could actually make sense.

Ruminate

8 October, 2018

Writing my Micro-Ethnography paper was a little difficult. I have never done an observation essay before, so it was hard trying to put that into an essay. In the last few journals, I told you about my writing process. Its pretty much similar as I felt but I learned a little bit more.

I believe my writing process is still the same. Before I write, I do not brainstorm or outline. I see the prompt and I just write. After writing a couple of sentences, I have to double-check it for any mistakes. Sometimes if I’m feeling little adventurous, I check my writing in Grammarly. Every week, it has gotten easier to write these blog posts. I know what to expect when I do these writing assignments. Its sort of like a habit now.

After my class on Wednesday, my professor cleared up some things that I was uncertain about. She said to write about what I observed and why it was important enough to notice it. If there was something in the observation and if it wasn’t in the observation anymore, how would it affect the story? After my class ended, I had to somewhat include the Toulman Argumentative Tactics. I don’t think that anything has changed in my writing. I use the same vernacular in every situation.

I know these changes had to occur. If this is what my professor was teaching in class, I think it was important enough to include it in the paper. I need to work on using the Toulman Argumentative Tactics. I need to get use to it for future essays.

It was hard to use the Toulman Argumentative Tactics correctly. When I was using this process, I didn’t know if I was doing it right. It was troubling to do the rebuttal. How do I know what my audience doesn’t believe in my words.

Game Observations

1 October, 2018

For my English 1101 class, we are observing any type of game and analyzing it. When I heard of the prompt, I could not think of game that I would want to observe. First I thought of PUBG, but I wondered if it any meaning to it. Then I thought of Fortnite and how popular it was. It couldn’t be just a game and it should have a back story. After I observed the game and wrote some notes, I did not want to do Fortnite anymore. I thought it was too boring and not creative enough. There might be another person analyzing Fortnite. I scrapped the whole idea. During my class discussions, we talked about games that involved going into several pathways. I thought of observing ToonTown. I know not a lot of people know about this game, so I’m going to write a paper about ToonTown.

I would have played ToonTown if I could, but I have to watch someone play and see what they would do. I asked one of my cousins to play it for me. After many scolding and begging, she finally caved and said yes. I had all ready downloaded the software onto my laptop, so I opened my laptop and clicked on it. I haven’t been on ToonTown for a while, so it had to re-update. It took an hour for it to stay on one file. I asked my cousin if she could download the software, so she could play. She pulled out her laptop and she downloaded the software. She clicked on it and I put in my username and password. I said to her I wasn’t going to talk to her or say anything.

We were on the homepage and she clicked on “Make A Toon”. She picked boy as her gender. At 11:00 A.M., she shuffles through animal and picks a duck. She goes through the colors and makes the duck yellow. At 11:01 A.M., she shuffles through the article of clothing. She makes her decision and ends up with a purple vest and white shorts. She picks her name, shuffles through the name selections and ends with her name as Professor Felix Flippergrin. Her character has been finished and she enters to ToonTown world. She goes through the tutorial with Tutorial Tom. She skims the directions of the game. At 11:02 A.M., she receives her first gag from Tutorial Tom. Tutorial Tom tells her to go outside and defeat some cogs. At 11:03 A.M., she leaves the door. She finds a cog and uses her gag for the first time. She defeats the cog. There is a message that tells her to go to Toon Headquarters. At 11:05 A.M., she walks to Toon Headquarters and talks to HQ Harry. She skims through his dialogue and walks out of Toon Headquarters. At 11:06 A.M., she meets Flippy, who teaches her how to use the chat button. She skims through his dialogue and continues. She walks around the playground; she explores everything and says hi to everyone. At 11:08 A.M., she discovers the Trolley and starts playing mini games. She avoids yet another tutorial. At 11:11 A.M., the game ends and a message pops up saying she needs to go to HQ Harry at Toon Headquarters. She goes to Toon Headquarters and meets HQ Harry. She disregards HQ Harry’s message and leaves Toon Headquarters. “Is that Loopy Lane? Where am I suppose to go?,” she said. At 11:12 A.M., she accidentally walks onto the dock. She discovers that you can fish in this lake. She gets distracted from her tasks and goes bingo fishing. “I don’t have any more thingys,” she said. This means that she doesn’t have any more jellybeans in her jar. At 11:13 A.M., she goes to the Trolley and plays more mini games. At 11:23 A.M., another message appears on the screen to remind her of her tasks. “This game is boring. I want more yogurt,” she said. She leaves the trolley and enters Loopy Lane. “Where do you have to go to kill someone. I want to kill someone, but that guy is too much, he’s too scary and fat,” she said. “Is that a girl?”, she said pointing at the Name Dropper, “He has a pretty big mouth.” At 11:25 A.M., she approaches a Bottom Feeder Level 2. “Why is his name Bottom Feeder?,” she said. He stamps her which makes her Laff Point decrease by 3. She attacks by pie and misses. Bottom Feeder attacks her and her Laff Points decrease by 5. She throws a pie and decreases the cogs Health Points by 4. This makes the cog erupt into parts. At 11:27 A.M., she goes up to another Bottom Feeder and throws a pie. This decreases the cog’s Health Point by 6. This makes another cog erupt into parts. Her throw and squirt levels increase. She receives another gag, Blueberry Pie. For thirty minutes, she plays more mini games in the Trolley.

Before the observation, I was expecting she would calmly go through the tutorial. She would read everything, follow the rules or play it fairly. During the observation, I was really surprised to see that she was skimming through the tutorials. She wasn’t even taking a backward glance on the directions. She did everything opposite of what the directions told her. “Has she all ready played before?” or “Is this game bad?” were wondering through my head.

Reflection

24 September, 2018

For those of you who are wondering how I wrote “Life Is a Game” and “Rhetoric in Video Games” and what I regret doing, then this blog post was meant for you.

In my “Life Is a Game” blog post, I performed what I actually wrote. I told my cousins that we should play The Game of Life and secretly recorded the whole game. I thought it would be easier for me to record, so I wouldn’t have to remember every detail later on. I believe that they were a little annoyed by me, because I had to shout out everything that was happening. There was so much happening physically that I couldn’t get my phone to see what was occurring. I didn’t have enough time to write what I wanted and I had to leave out information that was important to the narrative. Next time I do a long narrative, I hope I do right.

In my “Rhetoric in Video Games” blog post, I had to use an example from the DALN, Digital Archive of Literacy Narrative, and Evan Narcisse’s “Video Games’ Blackness Problem” and try to connect them with my class discussions. To be honest, it took me a lengthy amount of time to come up with something to write about. I had to go back into my black hole of a memory and re-collect what my class discussions were about. After I did one of the examples of the DALN, I summarized it in my mind what it was about and tied it to my class discussions and “Video Games’ Blackness Problem”. From each source, rhetoric was the main topic I could correlate. I write about my class discussions and incorporate Narcisse’s article and the DALN into the discussions. Next time I try to do a connection between sources, I will think longer and harder about what I am going to write about and make it better than I want to.
