Video games have drastically increased their popularity over the years and have established itself as another form of entertainment. Video games have expanded their social aspect with massively multiplayer online role-playing games, also known as MMORPGS. As more Americans play video games, it is harder for them to stop. Video games have been created to have the ability to “suck in” their players as they associate themselves as one with their character. Video game industries are taking advantage of this and are becoming more keen on developing their games by leaving a hidden message. Thus, MMORPGs have shifted their image to have a capitalistic issue due to the video game industry pressuring their consumers.
There is a video game that exemplifies this concept. Disney’s Toontown Online was a 3D MMORPG based on an animal cartoon world.
The video game was developed by Schell Games and Disney’s Virtual Reality Studio. Players can create their protagonist characters called “Toons”. The Toons have to eliminate the “Cogs”, the antagonist of the game. Cogs are corporate robots that want to take over the propagate business culture. The Toons can use weapons, called “Gags”, to defeat the Cogs.
